Lake Delhi was created in the 1920’s by the construction of a hydroelectric dam on the Maquoketa River. The Lake Delhi Recreation Association (LDRA) was formed in 1973 and purchased the dam. Donations and dam memberships supported the operations of the dam, water quality, repayment of dredge loans, events and communications of the LDRA. Since 1990, the Tax District Trustees Board manages the administration of tax dollars to dam maintenance. After the catastrophic dam failure in 2010 the dam was re-built in 2016 using a combination of donations, grant funds and tax dollars. At that time the Lake Delhi District (Trustees Board) took over responsibility to own & manage the dam, spillway, public properties, water quality and represent the property owners within the Lake Delhi Iowa Taxing District. This allowed the LDRA to re-focus their efforts on supporting recreation, conservation and community involvement.
The LDRA is a non-profit 501c(3) volunteer board with a focus on the people, events and viability of Lake Delhi. The goal is to build a strong community by connecting lake residents and lake-lovers with events in and around the lake. Regular LDRA board meetings are held with a public meeting in August.
Annual LDRA events include a charity golf outing, live music on the water, Christmas on the Lake and fireworks. The LDRA works to improve our beaches- most notably with a beach cleaner to remove rocks, provide fish habitat support and funding for lake-related clubs. All of these activities are solely supported by donations and business sponsorships.
