Lake Delhi: From Dam Break to Lake Great

Celebrating resilience and renewal

In July 2010, a historic rain event caused the Lake Delhi dam to breach, draining the lake and forever changing the community that had grown around it. What followed was not just loss—but determination. Property owners, volunteers, local leaders, and supporters rallied together, committing years of effort to raise funds, navigate regulatory hurdles, and rebuild what many feared was gone for good.

That perseverance paid off. In 2016, the dam reconstruction was completed and Lake Delhi was officially refilled—marking the return of a treasured place and the start of a new chapter.

Over the past decade, Lake Delhi has once again become a hub for recreation, connection, and community traditions. As we celebrate 10 years back on the water, we honor the resilience that made it possible and the people who continue to invest in Lake Delhi’s future.

About Lake Delhi

After rebuilding the dam in 2016, Lake Delhi fed by the Maquoketa River has lots to enjoy

Lake Delhi offers something for everyone!

Delhi is a scenic recreational lake in Eastern Iowa offering boating, fishing, beaches, parks, events, and year‑round outdoor fun for families and visitors.

Tucked away in the scenic hills of Eastern Iowa, Lake Delhi is a destination known for natural beauty, outdoor recreation, and strong community spirit. Fed by the Maquoketa River, the lake stretches nearly nine miles, winding through wooded bluffs and wildlife sanctuaries that create a peaceful yet vibrant setting for visitors of all ages.

Lake Delhi offers multiple public access points, making it easy to enjoy the water and surrounding views. Turtle Creek Park features camping, multiple boat ramps with trailer parking, a swimming beach, restrooms, and temporary docking. At the north end of the lake, Bailey’s Ford Park provides additional camping, pavilion space, and access for small watercraft. At the south end, visitors can experience the award‑winning dam and labyrinth spillway, completed in 2016. The dam site offers sweeping views, a visitor area, the Wall of Recognition, and displays highlighting Lake Delhi’s history. Kayakers and canoeists can also portage at the dam to continue downstream along the Maquoketa River.

Fishing is a favorite pastime at Lake Delhi, well known for attracting both recreational and experienced anglers. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources maintains an ongoing fish stocking program, supporting healthy fisheries and great fishing opportunities for years to come.

Relaxation is just as much a part of lake life. Lost Beach and North Beach are popular gathering spots for families and friends. Lost Beach is accessible by water and continues to grow as a destination, with recent development including a sand volleyball, year‑round campground, Smokey's Lost Bar & Grill restaurant, and a community pavilion. Midday up the lake, The Pizza Place restaurant is accessible by water or land. At the upper end of the lake, Lake’s End Resort offers visitors the chance to stay multiple days and fully experience everything Lake Delhi has to offer.

Whether you enjoy boating, skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, or a quiet cruise, Lake Delhi is an ideal place to be on the water. Several marinas around the lake provide boat rentals, fuel, maintenance services, and convenience items to keep your day running smoothly.

Beyond the water, Lake Delhi offers year‑round enjoyment including bird watching, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, rafting, snowmobiling, and community events. Keep an eye on the sky and shoreline—you may even spot bald eagles, who proudly call Lake Delhi home.

History of the LDRA

Lake Delhi was created in the 1920’s by the construction of a hydroelectric dam on the Maquoketa River. The Lake Delhi Recreation Association (LDRA) was formed in 1973 and purchased the dam. Donations and dam memberships supported the operations of the dam, water quality, repayment of dredge loans, events and communications of the LDRA. Since 1990, the Tax District Trustees Board manages the administration of tax dollars to dam maintenance.  After the catastrophic dam failure in 2010 the dam was re-built in 2016 using a combination of donations, grant funds and tax dollars. At that time the Lake Delhi District (Trustees Board) took over responsibility to own & manage the dam, spillway, public properties, water quality and represent the property owners within the Lake Delhi Iowa Taxing District. This allowed the LDRA to re-focus their efforts on supporting recreation, conservation and community involvement.

LDRA Today

The LDRA is a non-profit 501c(3) volunteer board with a focus on the people, events and viability of Lake Delhi. The goal is to build a strong community by connecting lake residents and lake-lovers with events in and around the lake. Regular LDRA board meetings are held with a public meeting in August.

Annual LDRA events include a charity golf outing, live music on the water, Christmas on the Lake and fireworks. The LDRA works to improve our beaches- most notably with a beach cleaner to remove rocks, provide fish habitat support and funding for lake-related clubs. All of these activities are solely supported by donations and business sponsorships.
